Cough & Cold – Symptoms & Remedies

It’s almost unavoidable; the common cold is one of the most annoying parts of life, but there are symptoms that you can recognize early, and many remedies that can help your recovery process more bearable. In today’s day and age, there are countless over the counter medications, as well as home remedies that can help you feel relief from the common cold. One of the main tricks for treating a cold is identifying it early. This season, at the first sign of a scratchy throat, runny nose, or cough, it is advised to start taking care of yourself because you are probably coming down with a cold. The common cold can actually be caused by over 200 viruses. All viruses that we call the common cold cause similar symptoms – itchy throat, body aches, headaches, mucus, and that dreaded cough.  Learn how to protect yourself and your family from the common cold this season, and stay out of the doctor’s office.

Most colds resolve themselves within about 10 days, but it is advised for you to seek medical attention if you have:

  • A fever over 100.4 degrees
  • Symptoms that last more than 10 days
  • Symptoms that do not go away even when you treat them with over the counter medications

What remedies will make you feel better?

  • Rest
  • Drink Fluids
  • Use a humidifier
  • Take over the counter medications for symptom relief
  • Practice good general hygiene
It is a good idea to avoid people who are visibly ill. If someone near you is showing symptoms of a cold, including sneezing or coughing, try to keep your distance. If one of your family members has fallen ill, make sure that they dispose of their own tissues, and cover their mouths by coughing into their elbows. Coughing into your hands is not advised; people normally go on to touch other communal surfaces after coughing in their hands, putting other members of the family at risk.
